Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 – this is the box art Picture SonyThe biggest announcement at Summer Game Fest was, bizarrely, PS5 exclusive Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which is starting pre-orders this month. If Microsoft manage to have a good Xbox Games Showcase then there are going to be some serious questions asked about what on earth Sony was playing at with its PlayStation Showcase. Especially as it’s now clear they left out important information about Spider-Man 2 just to announce it at the Summer Game Fest a couple of weeks later. There was no new gameplay footage at the Summer Game Fest, but developer Insomniac did unveil the game’s box art and confirmed its release date as October 20. An absurdly busy two week window that already includes Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Alan Wake 2, and Alone In The Dark. Some new artwork revealed the first look at Venom as he will appear in the game, which looked pretty standard for the character, but Insomniac made the surprise revelation that the human attached to the symbiote is not Eddie Brock, as it is usually is. A number of other characters have hosted Venom in the comics, including Mac Scorpion’ Gargan, Flash Thompson, and Brock’s son Dylan. However, we got the feeling that Insomniac are going with someone different, with the previous game seeming to hint at Harry Osborn – although that could easily be a misdirect. According to Insomniac they wanted to tell an original story, much as the first game subverted familiar Spider-Man stories, so who knows what is really going on with the character. There are no clues on the PlayStation Blog, but it did update with new information on pre-orders, which will begin on June 16 at 10am local time. Pre-ordering will grant you an early unlock’ you can get it eventually, even if you don’t pre-order Arachknight Suit with three colour variants for Peter and an early unlock Shadow Spider Suit for Miles. So, pre-order and you can… cheat by getting stuff earlier than you should do. The 10 suits do seem quite cool though as they’re all designed by different artists from comics, films, and other PlayStation studios – although we admit we don’t recognise any of the names. Finally, there’s a Collector’s Edition that will set you back an eye-watering £ and includes everything from the Digital Deluxe Edition, plus a SteelBook and a 19-inch tall statue, which also gives a good idea of how Venom will look in the game.
